The channel question — why it matters
The single biggest predictor of whether a loyalty programme will work isn't the reward structure or the platform price. It's whether your customer can get to their card without friction.
If your loyalty card lives only in an app, your customer has to:
- Hear about the app from you at the till
- Open the App Store or Play Store
- Search
- Download
- Sign up and create an account
- Open the app
- Find your shop and add the card
That's seven steps before they're holding their first stamp. The drop-off between "told about it at the till" and "actually using it the following week" is brutal — a wallet card by contrast is added in ten seconds with no download.
A web-based card lets the customer who refuses to download anything still join — they open their browser, sign in with Apple or Google, and they're in. An Apple/Google Wallet pass lives where their boarding passes and bank cards already live, pre-installed on every iPhone and Android phone.
The more channels a platform supports, the more of your customers will actually use it. Third-party industry analysts consistently report higher enrollment rates for wallet- and web-based loyalty than for app-only platforms — because the friction to join is materially lower. One caveat for honesty: there are UK loyalty platforms not in this comparison — Perkstar and Loopy Loyalty — that are wallet-first. They live in Apple/Google Wallet but don't have their own customer app or flash-deal discovery feed. That's a different trade-off for a different shop. If you want a wallet-only setup and don't care about a discovery network, look at them too. Among the four platforms in this comparison, multi-channel coverage is the LocalPal-only feature.
LocalPal
Best for: most UK indie shops — cafés, barbers, takeaways, butchers, nail salons, restaurants, off-licences, dry cleaners.
Channels: mobile app (iOS + Android), web (sign in with Apple or Google at app.localpal.co.uk), Apple Wallet, Google Wallet. The customer picks whichever fits.
Price: £25/month flat per site. No setup fee. No contract. No POS integration required. No per-customer charge — the price doesn't change when your list grows from 50 to 5,000.

What's good:
- Multi-channel — your customer never has to download an app to start

- Discovery feed — customers browse other LocalPal shops on their street, which means your shop benefits from other shops' signups
- £25 flat is the cheapest of the four
What to be aware of:
- UK only — if you're in Ireland or wider Europe, look at Squid or MagicStamp
- Customer discovery feed is most valuable on busy high streets where multiple LocalPal shops cluster; rural shops will have a lighter network effect at first
MagicStamp
Best for: cafés where the tactile in-store experience matters — places that want the physical ritual of a stamp at the till.
Channels: mobile app only. Customers download the Magic Stamp app and add cards from participating businesses. No web access; no native Apple/Google Wallet integration.
Price: £29 Basic / £49 Growth / £69 Advanced per site per month. £250 one-off custom card design fee on the higher tiers. £25 per additional stamp card design. A 5% transaction fee on their gift card ("voucher") feature.
Reward models: stamp cards only.
What's good:
- The physical "Magic Stamp" device — staff press it onto the customer's phone screen at the till — is genuinely distinctive. For certain café concepts it's a real piece of brand UX.
- UK-founded, long-running, established merchant base
- Strong presence in coffee shops
What to be aware of:
- Most expensive of the four at every tier — and the £250 setup fee plus per-stamp upcharge compound
- App-only — the seven-step download friction applies to every customer
- The physical stamp can wear out, get lost, or be stolen — it's hardware to look after
- Stamps-only — no store credit option for shops with variable ticket sizes
Embargo
Best for: mid-sized hospitality businesses — coffee chains, restaurant groups, bakery chains — that need a CRM and delivery/pickup ordering tied to their loyalty card.
Channels: the Embargo Wallet (their own app, on iOS and Android — confusingly named "Wallet" but it's not Apple/Google Wallet). No public web access for customers; no Apple/Google Wallet integration.
Price: custom quote — not publicly disclosed. Embargo describes it as "an affordable monthly rolling subscription." No setup costs claimed.
Reward models: stamp cards via their branded loyalty card.
What's good:
- The deepest CRM and analytics of the four — 40+ live reports, six built-in marketing tools, segmentation
- Built-in delivery and pickup ordering at "3× lower commission" than aggregators
- POS integration with major systems
- 4.9 App Store rating — highest-rated UK loyalty app
- 2,500+ venues already on the platform
- Real choice if your loyalty programme needs to plug into ordering and CRM as one system
What to be aware of:
- Hospitality only — not aimed at barbers, butchers, dry cleaners, off-licences
- Opaque pricing — quote-based, which means it's likely higher than transparent £25-flat options once you scale
- Heavier setup (1–3 working days to launch a branded card) vs same-day on LocalPal
- The CRM depth is genuinely the deepest of the four; if you're a small independent who just wants stamps, it's more product than you need
Honestly: if you run a full-service restaurant group with delivery and need rich CRM, Embargo is probably the better fit than LocalPal today.
Squid Loyalty
Best for: shops in Ireland (their primary market), and UK shops that specifically want to plug into the Squid + Square partnership.
Channels: mobile app (iOS + Android). Customers tap a Squid NFC tag at the till to collect stamps; rewards are redeemed in the app. No public web access; no Apple/Google Wallet integration.
Price: €20/month per business in Ireland. UK pricing not publicly disclosed — assume similar, but ask. 30-day free trial.
Reward models: stamp cards plus "Wave Points" — a cross-merchant points system unique to the Squid network.
What's good:
- Strong network in Ireland — by far the most loyalty cards collected by Irish customers sits on Squid
- Partnership with Square gives merchants who already use Square POS a straightforward route in
- Wave Points create network-wide value (customers earn at one merchant, redeem at another)
- Clean, modern app
What to be aware of:
- Ireland-first — their UK network is materially smaller than the Irish one
- The
squid-loyalty.co.ukdomain redirects tosquidloyalty.ie, which signals their UK strategy is light-touch - Customer app only — no web, no wallet
- Wave Points only work inside the Squid network; if a customer isn't already on Squid, the cross-merchant value is theoretical
Pricing compared
A few notes on the comparison:
- LocalPal's £25 flat has no per-customer charge, no setup fee, no per-stamp upcharge. The bill you see in month one is the bill you see in month twenty-four with 1,000 customers on the list.
- MagicStamp's tiered pricing compounds: a Growth-tier shop with a custom card design and three stamp cards designed pays £49 + £250 (one-off) + £75 (3 × £25 extra stamps) in the first month — meaningful set-up cost.
- Embargo's quote is genuinely opaque. If you have a chain of 5+ venues with delivery and POS integration needs, the per-venue price probably becomes competitive at scale; for a single independent shop, expect higher than £25.
- Squid's €20 is Ireland-priced. UK pricing isn't published.
Best for X — honest recommendations
A four-way comparison only earns trust if it picks a winner for each situation honestly. Here are ours.
For a typical UK indie shop (single location, £4–£20 ticket, want push and flash deals built in) → LocalPal. Cheapest, multi-channel, both reward models supported, fastest to launch. This is our actual sweet spot, said plainly.
For a café where the in-store ritual matters → MagicStamp. The physical stamp at the till is a real brand experience. If you'll happily pay £29–£69/month for that texture, it's the call. If you wouldn't notice the difference, take the £25 LocalPal saves you.
For a full-service restaurant or hospitality chain needing CRM and delivery integration → Embargo. Their CRM and ordering stack is materially deeper than the others. If you need a loyalty card AND a delivery channel AND a CRM as one product, this is the most complete option. The trade-off is opaque pricing and a steeper learning curve.
For a shop in Ireland → Squid Loyalty. The local network effect is real, and the Square partnership matters if you're already on Square POS.
For a UK shop whose customers are app-resistant → LocalPal. The web option means the customer who flatly refuses to download anything still ends up on your list. The other three require an app download to participate.
